No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
